Sri Lankan cricket team attacked in Pakistan

LAHORE, Pakistan – A dozen masked gunmen armed with rifles and rocket launchers attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team as it traveled to a match in Pakistan on Tuesday, wounding several players and killing five police officers, officials said.

The assailants ambushed the team's convoy at a traffic circle close to the main sports stadium in the eastern city of Lahore ahead of a match against Pakistan's national team, triggering a 15-minute gunbattle with police guarding the vehicles.

None of the attackers were killed or captured at the scene, said city police chief Haji Habibur Rehman said. Authorities did not speculate on the identities of the attackers or their motives.

TV footage showed gunmen with backpacks — apparently the attackers — firing at the convoy as they retreated from the scene, with several damaged vehicles and a lone, unexploded grenade lying on the ground.

Pakistan is battling a ferocious insurgency by Islamist militants with links to al-Qaida who have staged high-profile attacks on civilian targets before. Authorities will also be looking possible links to Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger separatist rebels who are being badly hit in a military offensive at home.

The attack took place three months after the Mumbai terror attacks, which were allegedly carried out by Pakistan militants. In the past, nuclear-armed rivals Pakistan and India have blamed each other for attacks in their territories. Any allegations like that would worsen the already dangerously high tensions between the countries.

A Sri Lankan foreign ministry official said two players — Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavitana — were hospitalized. He said three more players were slightly injured and that the head coach, Australian Trevor Bayliss, also sustained minor injuries. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Squad member Kumar Sangakkara told Sri Lankan radio station Yes-FM that "all the players are completely out of danger."

"Luckily there's nothing serious and everyone is fine," he said.

Police chief Haji Habibur Rehman said five policemen died in the attack by 12 masked gunmen.

Authorities cancelled the test match and the Lahore governor said the team was flying home.

The attack will surely mean the end of international cricket in Pakistan for months, if not years. Even before, most teams refused to tour the country because of security concerns. It will also have implications on the game's future in South Asia, its most lucrative market.

- Mark Zuckerberg, the 23-year-old founder of social networking site Facebook, is the youngest ever self-made billionaire, according to an annual list published by Forbes magazine.

“He is the youngest billionaire in the world right now and we also believe he is the youngest self-made billionaire in history,” said the magazine’s Associate Editor Matthew Miller, unveiling this year’s super-rich list.

Industrialist Anil Ambani continues to be on the focus of US magazine Forbes but this time around for topping the list of ‘Billionaire Blowups of 2008′ by virtue of turning the biggest loser of wealth in less than a year of being touted as the biggest gainer in the world.
"The biggest loser of all was Anil Ambani. Touted on the cover of our 2008 billionaires issue for having added 24 billion dollars to his fortune in one year, Ambani has dropped $30 billion since then," the report said.

The report further added that three of "his fellow countrymen — estranged brother Mukesh, steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal and Indian K P Singh, all of whom ranked earlier among the world's 10 richest — lost more than $20 billion apiece."

Abhinav the golden boy of india,is from Mohali, Punjab and is the current World and Olympic champion in the 10 m Air Rifle event. By winning the gold in the 10 m Air Rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, he became the first Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games and the first gold medal since 1980 when the Men's Field Hockey Team won the gold.
Abhinav, a BBA graduate hails from a sikh family with a bussiness background. Bindra's potential talent was first spotted by his first coach Lt. Col. J.S. Dhillon. Bindra was the youngest Indian participant at the 2000 Olympic Games. His current coach is Gabriela Buhlmann from Basel, Switzerland, with whom he trained in Germany before the Olympics He scored 590 (98,99,98,97,100) placing him 11th in the qualification round, and did not qualify for the finals since only the top 8 compete in the finals.

HALL OF FAME

Bindra won six medals at various international meets in 2001. In the 10 m Air rifle event at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, Manchester, he won Gold in the Pairs event and Silver in the individual event.

At the 2004 Olympic Games, he scored 597 in the qualification round and was placed third behind Qinan Zhu (599 - Olympic Record) and Li Jie (598). In the finals, Abhinav finished with 97.6 points, last in the field of eight and was the only player below 100 points. His sub-par finals dropped him from third to seventh.

At the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, he won the Gold in the Pairs event and the Bronze in the Singles event. Abhinav missed the 2006 Asian Games at Doha because of a back injuiry.

He scored 596 (fourth) in the qualifying round and out-scored all other shooters in the finals with a round of 104.5. In the finals, he started with a shot of 10.7, and none of his shots were below 10.0.[12] Bindra was tied with Henri Häkkinen heading into his final shot. Bindra scored his highest of the finals - 10.8 while Hakkinen came with 9.7 to settle for Bronze medal.[13]

India clinched its first ever individual Olympic gold medal in 108 years when Abhinav Bindra won the 10 meter air rifle event in one of the most pulsating shooting finals in the history of the world's biggest sporting extravaganza.

His first shot of the final a 10.7 saw him move to the third place and by the time he was preparing to shoot his fourth, the Indian had risen to the second spot.

A 10.6 on his seventh attempt earned Bindra the lead and in the deciding shot he got 10.8, way ahead of 10.5 by the Chinese and 9.7 by the Finn to bring India the first ever gold medal by an individual since the country first participated in Olympics in 1900.

A group called the "Indian Mujahideen" said it carried out the Ahmedabad attack, writing in an e-mail sent five minutes before the first blast that it was in revenge for a 2002 massacre in Gujarat of around 2,500 people, mainly Muslims, by Hindu mobs.
The email sent to various news media read"Do whatever you can, within 5 minutes from now, feel the terror of Death!"
The email from the Indian Mujahideen warned the governments of several states to stop harassing, imprisoning and torturing Muslims and told media outlets to stop their "propaganda war" against Muslims.
It also warned Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries and one of the world's richest men, to think twice before building a luxury 27-storey home on land in Mumbai previously owned by a Muslim charity.
Police also traced the Indian Mujahideen e-mail to a computer belonging to an American, living in a Mumbai suburb, who has been questioned. Local media said his computer may have been hacked.

The death toll from a series of bomb blasts in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad climbed to 45 as the provincial government ordered a probe along with federal agencies to search for suspects.

``Investigations with all the concerned agencies at the highest level is going on now,'' Jaynarayan Narmadasankar Vyas, health minister of the Gujarat state, said in a telephone interview from Ahmedabad today. ``The central and state intelligence agencies are coordinating in the probe.''

Terrorist attacks in Indian cities have killed more than 185 people in the past year as bombs strapped to bicycles or hidden under theater seats and near market stalls have targeted civilians. While the government typically blames foreign-trained terrorists, most of the attacks are unsolved.

The dead included three women and two children, N.R. Baraiya, an officer at the police control room in Ahmedabad, said in a telephone interview today. The toll from 16 serial blasts that rocked the city late yesterday mounted as people wounded in the attacks succumbed to injuries in hospitals, he said. City hospitals are treating more than 100 injured in the attacks.

Saturday evenin terror struck ahemedabad, when 16 well planned bombs blasts hit the city with in a sapan of one hour.The first bomb ripped of at saturday evening 6.45,followed by a serial of blast at 14 crowded areas including market places in the Gujarat capital. To the present result 45 killed and almost 100 injured. Most of the bombs were placed in bicycles and are co-ordinated to blast during the peak hours of the market. The police however made their first arrest on yesterday s s.ill not able to find any athuenticating clue.
The Union home ministry issued a nation-wide alert on tuesday night .A special advisory has been sent to all the states, especially the BJP-ruled states to be cautious of similar terror attacks.

Making a statement of its commitment to protect the environment, Japanese car major Honda on Wednesday launched the first hybrid car in India, Civic Hybrid, priced at Rs 21.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).The car is powered by a 1.3 litre petrol engine and an electric motor that deliver 47 per cent enhanced fuel efficiency than a regular 1.8 litre Civic automatic transmission.

Developed way back in 1999, the Civic Hybrid has sold over 2,60,000 units across the world and India is the 33rd country where Honda has launched the car.

“This is yet another step to strengthen Honda’s presence in India in line with our long term goal of bringing eco friendly vehicles,” Honda Siel Car India president and CEO Masahiro Takedawa said in New Delhi.

He said the company was not looking at volumes from the car but “is an opportunity to offer to customers technology we have. It is a Honda statement to protect the environment”.

“So far we have received over 100 inquiries from the 80 dealerships we have across India,” Takedagawa said, however, adding bringing the car to India was a challenging task.

“We have to set an entirely new standard for testing and homologating this car in collaboration with Automotive Research Association of India as, there were no regulations earlier,” he said.

Australian Tom Moody has signed up to coach the Mohali team in the money-spinning Indian Premier League (IPL), the franchise has announced.

“With Yuvraj (Singh) being our captain and Moody as coach, I think everything has fallen into place for us,” Ness Wadia, co-owner of the team, was quoted by the Indian media on Monday.

Moody, 42, a member of two World Cup-winning Australian teams, coached Sri Lanka for two years before leaving in May last year to take up reins for Western Australia.

“We really don’t know much about the game and its technicalities,” said Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, who is also part of the consortium that bought the franchise for $76 million over a 10-year-period. “But we will take professional help to run the franchise in the most efficient manner. “We will take input from captain, coach and the technical members that we are hiring,” she added.

The inaugural edition of the International Cricket Council-sanctioned Twenty20 league starts on April 18.

The tournament will be played over 44 days between eight franchises in eight cities and will feature 59 matches.

Indian media has said former India coach Greg Chappell, ex-Australia coach John Buchanan and Victoria’s Greg Shipperd were the other Australian coaches targeted by IPL teams.

More than 80 international cricketers are expected to feature in a player “auction” in Mumbai on Wednesday with each franchise allowed a cap of $5 million.

Dhoni and Symonds top $1m mark in IPL auction

MUMBAI: India one-day captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Australian Andrew Symonds crossed the million-dollar mark as the world's top cricketers were auctioned off for the Twenty20 Indian Premier League (IPL).

Chennai bought Dhoni for $1.5 million, which was nearly four times the Indian's base price of $400,000 in the opening round of the novel sell-off held before the lucrative 44-day tournament's debut in April.

All-rounder Symonds was a close second after going for $1.35 million to the Hyderabad team. Team-mates Brett Lee was bought by Mohali for $900,000 and Ricky Ponting by Kolkata for $400,000.

Eight franchise owners, including corporate tycoons and Bollywood actors, were bidding for 77 cricketers in a pioneering process that some observers believe will change the face of the game.

"It's a landmark day. I have not seen anything like this before. It has been amazing," said IPL governing council member Inderjit Singh Bindra.

Lenovo's ThinkPad X300 vs Apple mac book AIR

The new ultrathin laptop from Lenovo could become the first major competitor to Apple's MacBook Air.

In a sneak preview by The Wall Street Journal's Walter Mossberg, the ThinkPad X300 has a 13-inch-wide screen, a full keyboard, and a 64GB solid-state drive (SSD). Apple has touted a 13.3-inch-wide screen and a full keyboard as among the highlights of the Air.

Built-In DVD, Removable Battery: But the Air, launched last month during Steve Jobs' keynote address at MacWorld, has been criticized as skimpy on some features.

For instance, the Air lacks a built-in DVD drive, and instead offers wireless access to an external drive. Its battery cannot be removed by the user, and the machine offers only one USB port.

The X300, on the other hand, has a built-in DVD drive, a removable battery, three USB ports, and an Ethernet networking jack. It can also be customized with a cell-phone modem or GPS. And it has an advantage among new Windows computers -- it can be ordered with either Windows XP or Vista.

Heaver than traditional notebooks: Unlike the Air, Mossberg noted, the X300 is "a bit heavier than the three-pound weight that traditionally denotes a subnotebook." It is 3.12 pounds with the standard battery and DVD drive, but he added that it "still feels very light to carry around."

While Mossberg and others are comparing the X300 to the Air, IDC's Doug Bell said it isn't a direct competitor because Lenovo is geared toward the enterprise market and Apple, while making some inroads into businesses, is still primarily consumer-oriented.

The X300 has features important to the road warrior, Bell noted. The most important, he said, is the removable battery, but he also cited the built-in DVD drive and extra USB ports. The option of choosing XP is also appealing to business users not prepared to move to Vista, he said.

But Bell noted that the price, expected to be $2,500-2,800, "is a drawback." That is higher than average for this kind of device, he said, and was likely driven by the more expensive SSD instead of a less-pricey hard drive. The X300 reportedly will only be available with the 64GB SSD. The entry-level Air, by contrast, is offered with a 80-GB hard drive for about $1,800, and with a 64-GB solid-state drive and slightly faster processor, it's $3000. The Air also offers a trackpad with the multi-touch interface made famous by Apple's iPhone.

Bell also pointed out that buyers have options among other ultra-portables, although the X300 and Air are distinguished by their thinness, weight, screen size and full keyboard. But he was confident that, in the not-too-distant future, "you'll be seeing this form factor from all the major vendors."
